The neuro-chemical changes that take place in the body during sexual behavior can become as addicting as actual drugs. There are many signs that someone has a sex addiction. Since they often feel guilt and shame for what they do, they tend to live very secretive lives. They live normal lives by day and become somebody completely different by night. Signs that somebody has a problem could be something discrete like “accidently” touching people as they walk by, or something more extreme like raping and molesting children. Sex addicts masturbate a lot and sometimes even cut or pinch themselves for sexual arousal. Other addicts get off by exposing themselves or indulging in pornography and strip clubs. Some sex addicts have anonymous one-night stands on a regular basis, even though they may be involved in a committed relationship with a person they love very much. They do this when the relationship is having problems or when the initial “new love” high wears off. Addicts experience a variety of symptoms. They often feel very shameful about what they have done because they know it is wrong. They might feel so depressed about this that they go into denial and blame their sexual partner, even if it was rape. They feel the need to justify their actions by making themselves believe that the other person deserved it. They also may experience anxiety, sleeplessness, and depression, when they have to go extended periods without sex or once they have realized the extent of the action they have committed. There are ten main forms of sexual addiction. They are compulsive masturbation, compulsive sex with prostitutes, anonymous sex with multiple partners, multiple affairs, frequent patronizing of topless bars, habitual voyeurism, inappropriate sexual touching, and sexual abuse of children. The compulsive masturbating that takes place is accompanied by thoughts of sex or while viewing sexual images on the TV, internet, or books, or even from non-sexual pictures or material. Compulsive sex with prostitutes is common because it is convenient because the workers can be picked up off the streets close to their homes. Anonymous sex is a problem because sex becomes the basis of the relationship rather than love. Frequent patronizing of topless bars can include modeling studios, tanning salons, adult bookstores, or massage establishments.
