Thomas Jefferson was also known as a Democratic Republicans, in fact, they were often called Jeffersonians. The Jeffersonians believed in a strict interpretation of the Constitution, believing that anything that wasn’t written in the Constitution, was wrong and therefore anti-Constitutional. In 1803, Jefferson was presented with an opportunity to buy Louisiana. In spite of all he had advocated, he bought Louisiana, even though there was nothing in the Constitution that approved land purchases. Some might argue that he did it for the good of the nation, but no matter how “good” it is for the nation, it was a hypocritical decision. In doing so, he had no right to criticize Hamilton for his loose interpretation of the Constitution. Lastly, Jefferson, in the Declaration of Independence stated “all men are created equal,” but he had close to 150 slaves working at Monticello, his home. He even had a sexual relationship with one of them, Sally Hemming. They had several children together, none of which were acknowledged by Jefferson.
