In 1966 a liberal government consigned young Australian men aged 18 to 25 to be sent Vietnam to be involved in a long tan in which 100 men of decompany fought a prolonged battle against 1500 V.C. and N.V.A. troops. Vietnam was initially taken over by the French in the late 19th century. In 1941 Vietnam had been occupied by the Japanese forces which Vietnamese guerillas organized themselves to fight the Japanese. When Japanese forces became struck down in 1945 guerillas where waiting for recognition from the world especially U.S.A. but un-fortunately the French returned. From the period 1945 until 1954 a nationalist struggled against the French run by Ho Chi Minh and general GIAP, eventually resulting with the defeat of the French forces at the battle of Dinh Binh Phu.
