Mix of Race

...s an independent institution in 1965. It is located in the heart of Los Angeles, California, where it is the most diverse city in culture because people came from all over the world. Casta paintings are generally composed of 16 scenes showing a family group, a father, mother, and one or two children, illustrating various racial mixtures and indicating their social status through clothe and every activities. For example,the offspring of a Spaniard and an Indian would be considered a Mestizo. A Spaniard and a Mestizo would result in a Castizo. A Castizo and a Spaniard would produce a new race or casta. The most complicated categories were the mixing of race of an Indian and an African because the mix were called a Wolf. And a Spaniard and Albino (the name of descendent from a Mulatto) produced a child known as a Return-Backwards. The exhibition was to notice the many races we had before and how the need to create a system to organize an increasingly multicultural society in Mexico. Now days still is happening around the world. Those casta paintings were composed with their social and historical context. It shows why the subject of interracial families became a topic of a pictorial genre that lasted an entire century, and why the paintings, with their beautiful and colorful of objects and detailed labores, remain as intriguing today as they were in the eighteenth century.
