...ey needed a way to communicate and record the happenings of their day to day life. They came up with a writing system where pictures stood for ideas. The Nile River would flood the banks of Egypt annually, leaving behind a rich deposit of fertile black mud. In order for the Egyptians to keep track of the yearly flooding, they developed a calendar system. The calendar was so accurate, it fell short of a true solar year by only 6 hours. At the end of the Old Kingdom there was a period of illness, referred to as the first illness, which lead to the Middle Kingdom. The Middle Kingdom’s achievements were also significant. The Egyptians had a problem with people breaking into the pyramids and stealing. In order to resolve this problem, they started building tombs underground in order to hide them from thieves. Another problem the Egyptians had was unpredictable flooding of the river. In order to make sure that their agriculture could continue to thrive, they established an irrigation system. Another achievement was the development of religion. During the Old Kingdom Egyptians believed that only pharaohs had souls, by the Middle Kingdom they believed that all people had souls. After the Middle Kingdom there was yet another period of illness leading to the New Kingdom. The achievements of the New Kingdom were trivial compared to those of the Middle and Old Kingdom.
