Increasing the number of security guards and allowing them to have such things as mace, possibly guns, walkie talkies and cell phones would definitely help security measures. Not only would students feel safer, but there would also be a little bit of fear put in them, which is not necessarily a bad thing. People might be less likely to bring a gun or weapon to school if they know there is an authority figure who has one with them at all times. Also, students might feel safer if the security guards had cell phones and walkie talkies. This way, there would always be some sort of contact to the outside world, which would be useful in a case like Columbine. Allowing students to have cell phones in school might also be of some sort of a benefit. If students were in trouble, or in need of some sort of rescue care, another student could use a cell phone to call paramedics or police. If used, this might have saved some lives in Littleton. Electronic devices, such as metal detectors and security cameras, although expensive, would greatly benefit schools. The cameras would provide a quicker response time if an event like a fight breaks out, or something of that nature. Although some privacy rights would be infringed on, these could help the school greatly. Metal detectors would prevent students from trying to bring some sort of gun, knife, or wallet chain in school, thus preventing the use of it. All of these security measures would not hurt the school, but in reality would only help it. There are only a couple reasons not to resort to using such security measures. First, some people feel that there is such a thing as “too much security.” However, it is better to have too much security than not enough.
