...’s opening statement includes “Payton Farquhar was a well-to-do planter, of an old and highly respected Alabama family”(Bierce 8). Paragraph eight reverts the story back into the past. It tells the story of Peyton Farquhar and the circumstances surrounding his current predicament. This break in the story implies, but does not clearly state, Payton went to cut the bridge, but was caught by the Federal troops. The story then continues on with his current problem. The Federal troops let the rope go and Payton finds no way out of this situation. Just then the rope breaks sending Payton hurling to the stream below. He hits the water and desperately tries to escape his captors who are now shooting at him. He eventually finds his way out of the water and immediately pursues the trip home. After walking through the forest for what seems like a day, he eventually makes it home. He sees his wife smiling with happiness and as he travels in her direction with outstretched arms he is suddenly jerked back in to reality. Payton is dead from a broken neck sustained while being hanged. Beirce uses this sequence of events to convey the imagination of Payton while he was actually being hanged. Although the story takes place over many hours it actually was only a split second in reality. Bierce uses this second break in the story not to give history, but to give the reader information as to what Payton was experiencing as he was actually being hanged.
