...other, which leads to the other sister doing unimaginable things out of jealousy. Many forms of jealousy occur throughout the story even though Inanna was out to do good. Ereshkigal’s husband, Gugalanna, the Bull of Heaven, died. “Inanna abandoned her temple to descend to the underworld” so that she can witness the funeral rites of Ereshkigal’s husband, Gugalanna. When Inanna arrived, she was questioned by the gate guard and had to wait outside until Ereshkigal received her message. When she was finally able to enter through the gates, she had to remove all that she was wearing. She had to enter naked and bowed low. Even though Inanna is Ereshkigal’s sister, she was made her enter as a low person who doesn’t mean anything to her. Ereshkigal’s actions made it clear that there was jealousy in her heart even to the point where she made Inanna appear very low in order for her to talk to her. Another strong action of jealousy made by Ereshkigal, was when she killed Inanna before Inanna could say anything to her. The Anunna, the judges of the underworld, “surrounded Inanna” and also “passed a judgment against her” and then Ereshkigal “struck her, and she was turned into a corpse. Out of all jealousy she had the courage to kill her own sister. All of this occurred because one sister had a better reputation than the other one.
