Claude Frollo's Obsession

The only truth of the matter was that Frollo was in love with La Esmeralda. Once she was in his head, he simply couldn't get her out. When he discovered he couldn't overcome his lust for her, he threw his entire being into destroying her and loving her. That was his goal the entire time; to be rid of her one way or another. No matter how hard he tries to make her love him, he only ends up causing her pain. “Claude breaks out into a tirade, claiming that he has always loved La Esmeralda and that he set her up for murder so he could visit her privately in jail. He offers to save her life and she refuses and doesn’t want to go near him.” After Quasimodo rescues her to the Notre Dame, Frollo wants La Esmeralda forcibly removed from the Notre Dame and hanged with in three days because he is angry that she doesn’t want to have anything to do with him. If I shall not have her, "Nobody shall have her!” Claude Frollo's schemes controlled his life and decided the fate of the little gypsy girl. His obsession is what caused him to be killed by Quasimodo. They both loved Esmeralda so when Quasimodo realized that because of Claude Esmeralda was hanged; he threw him off the towers of Notre Dame. Quasimodo did everything in his power to keep her safe and when the vagabonds came charging, he fought back. The only reason they went in the Notre Dame was the decision of Frollo because he was a selfish man. Claude Frollo’s obsessive lust for La Esmeralda causes her to be executed and Quasimodo to be tortured. Claude Frollo’s obsession just brought along pain and death, but Frollo was so selfish he couldn’t see it because he was blinded by it. Claude Frollo was obsessed with two people in the novel. Victor Hugo gives many good details on how Claude Frollo is obsessed through out the novel. Claude Frollo knew he was obsessed with La Esmeralda but as for Quasimodo he just wanted to make him happy. As for Quasimodo, Frollo knew what the people thought of him. Frollo brought him up in the church and had Quasimodo as the bell ringer. Bell ringing is what made Quasimodo love and eventually become obsessed with the bells. Frollo loved every single one of the characters and only wanted them to love him back. With La Esmeralda, Frollo went far and beyond to make La Esmeralda hate him ever more. Claude would make obscene comments to her, because he is trying to hide the fact that he really wants her. Just because Quasimodo was deaf and couldn’t talk, he knew in his eyes he was becoming a failure. He knew that he couldn’t make La Esmeralda love him and that eventually brought him to shame and the execution of La Esmeralda. This great change caused him to lose all the things he has ever loved.
