...ilization.I would say that the story focuses on mental and phisical proces of phisical isolation. He has to suffer all this alone, he seems to be losing faith, hope.He has no will to live without any human being.He needs companion to survive so he creates one by painting a face on the volleyball.He names him Wilson. His new silent companion becomes his representation of faith. Tom starts communicate with this volleyball and almost makes Wilson as a real person with real feelings.He speaks to it, he carries it with him all over the island. He bickers with Wilson, he yells at him, he defies him, he tosses Wilson out of the cave and than he runs around the island , screaming histerically trying to find him.He secures it to his raft when he escapes the island. When Wilson becomes separated from raft and floats to far out to be "rescued" Chuck has lost his faith, he is sobbing at the hopelessness of his situation.You can notice how bad and lonely he felt, as if Wilson was a real person, real spirit- it was very emotional moment.
