They spend less time with parents and siblings but rather spend more time with other peers. Most friendships are based on intimacy and loyalty at this time. They also show increased gender stereotyping of attitudes and behavior. Peer pressure increases adding extra stress. Choices made during this period are often not wise and they do not seek the help of a parent or peer counselor. Teenagers often question parental authority. Parents who are financially secure, invested in their work and content with their marriages usually find it easier to give teenagers support, guidance, and appropriate independence. When parents and adolescents have serious troubled relationships, the difficulties usually begin in childhood. Sibling relationships become less intense as adolescents separate from the family and turn toward peers. But for some siblings remain strong for most young people. During this time also many adolescence go through a period where sex, drugs and alcohol become a huge stress factor added to everyday life.
