I heard a great line early on that, “When you act you can be seen.” This is a great concept. The man, Kenisten, says something to his seamstress about how he had trained for years to act like a woman and be stripped of all his masculinity just so that he can play the woman parts. So it was devastating when they lift the ban and make it unlawful for a man to play woman parts anymore. Then, people think of him as a queer and beat him up. He then tries out for a man role and he couldn’t do it. I felt very bad for him. The next thing that happens is that his seamstress, Claire Danes, starts performing. I was happy for her because earlier in the movie when he was performing you could see the yearning in her eye to act. A man makes a comment that she is the first of her kind to do what he did last. It took me two days to understand what that comment meant but, once I did that was heart wrenching. She gets a room for him because he’s homeless. Then, they start do gender changing roles. I thought that was cute. They seem like they might have sex but then he changes the subject and asks her how she would die...
