coca cola

... Coke was first introduced at Jacobs Pharmacy on May 8th, 1886. When it was introduced it was not carbonated. Later though, they would use carbonated water to make the drink that 94% of the world recognizes. Dr. Pemberton’s bookkeeper came up with the name “Coca-Cola” and also the unique logo which is still used today. His name was Frank Robinson. Dr. Pemberton invented this mixture to be used as a nerve and brain tonic for the pharmaceutical industry. Some people DID use it for a medicinal elixir. However, Dr. Pemberton ran into some trouble in his first year. He had spent more money on advertising his new invention than he received in profits from selling it. He was in debt, so what did he do? He sold part of the company to A.S.A. Candler. Another reason for selling part of the company was that Dr. Pemberton was in bad health and didn’t know how much longer he had to live. Candler eventually bought the whole company from Dr. Pemberton for 2,300 dollars. Candler achieved great success while he owned the company. Dr. Pemberton had patented the Coca-Cola syrup and Extract Company in 1887. On January 31, 1893, Candler patented the Coca-Cola trademark. Candler proceeded to open many syrup manufacturing plants; the first one was in 1884. Candler came up with the idea of using a large scale bottling process and made it possible in 1899.Years later, the Coca-Cola Company asked the Root Glass company to make a unique coke bottle for them. The Root Glass Company did just that in 1915. Since the beginning of the Coca-Cola Empire, there have been many different advertising slogans. Such slogans like the 1929 one, “the pause that refreshes”, or in 1986 when they touched America by having the slogan, “catch the wave, Red, White and You.” (www.geocites.com/Heartland/4269/slogans.html.) The Coke Company advertised on billboards or in the newspapers. In the newspapers, the Coca-Cola Company would give out free coupons for Coca-Cola. Candler decided to sell the company and this time a man named Ernest Woodruff bought the company. He paid 25 million dollars for it. Ernest then presented the company to his son Robert Woodruff as a gift. Robert remained the Coca-Cola Companies Chairman and Chief Executive Officer for over six decades. (www.cocacola.com). Robert was a good man. He was very influential in the Atlanta, Georgia area. He was always contributing to the community in which he lived and did business in. He gave money or goods to colleges, businesses and organizations. He never took credit for his good deeds. He was known as Mr. Anonymous. Robert was the reason that the six bottle carton was introduced around 1923. Coke became available in vending machines in 1929. The Coca-Cola “Bell” glass was made available to the public that same year! It was an exciting time as the Coke Company started advertising on the radio in the 1930’s and then on the television in 1950. Today, Coke advertises on over 500 channels. Advertising gimmicks have also helped to promote Coca-Cola throughout the years. In 1931 a successful Christmas promotion featured the first “Coke” Santa. Robert Woodruff was also responsible for the making of the 12 ounce can in 1960. The Coca-Cola Company received a patent on its unique bottle design in 1977. The very next year, 1978, the two liter bottle and plastic bottles w...
