What I believe a Good Teacher Is
...olve her book problems. Most students don’t know what they are capable of doing and it is up to a good teacher to help them reach their full potential. When Miss Boufis started class most of her students were reading at a fourth to seventh grade level and now their reading level have raised. The teacher before her used to read to the students but now they read for themselves. Boufis compared her jail students to her college students and said “they are quick to spot the fact when Sula’s brother return from the war he is a drug addict….my Berkeley didn’t pick up on the drug connection”. Christina Boufis jail students have improved so much that they have gone so far as to pick up on things her college students have missed. They have surpassed their potential, done better that anyone would have expected. A good teacher should get to know her students before she judge them. When Christina Boufis first started teaching she was a little afraid. Standing in front of a classroom with a bunch of women dressed in orange was a little unnerving but she took the time to get to know the women and now she says in her essay that “I barely notice the bright orange uniform anymore…instead I see only the women and their individual faces”. Boufis got to know the women for who they are and look beyond their circumstances.
