...ions. A draft would not even fill a fifth of the military positions that need to be filled. A reinstatement of the draft would be far too expensive for the United States government. A military draft would cost an estimated $50 billion, not including the money our government is spending everyday for the troops in Iraq. The cost of drafting everybody and providing them with supplies like shelter and food would just cost too much. The cost of reinstating a military draft would tremendously outweigh the reward. Yet, if the draft were reinstated, opposition to the Iraq war would increase dramatically. Americans do not want their innocent lives to be decided by a war that the majority of the American public does not agree with. A military draft would also be unfair to people between the ages of 18-26. Four million young people turn 18 every year. Why should the age bracket be limited to just 18-26 year olds? Why not senior citizens? I think senior citizens are just as capable and effective as a 19 year old. I think that it should be a broader range of ages, which would be a much more equally and socially accepted. For example, why not an age bracket of 25-45. Using this age bracket would be more effective because the older you are, the more experience you have had. Another reason for not having a military draft is because waging war requires much more than soldiers. You need tanks, bombs, bullets and aircraf which cost a great deal of money. The reason is that the government pays the kind of prices that producers voluntarily supply these products. A draft will do nothing but make the American tax payers angry and rebellious. There is a couple reasons as to why the military draft should be reinstated. As an American citizen, we should feel obligated to serve and protect our country to the best of our ability. The draft should serve the purpose of increasing military manpower in order to fight a defensive war against a state or nation that has declared war on the United States. Another reason the draft should be reinstated is because of the war in Iraq. The war in Iraq is the largest scale U.S. military operation since Vietnam. Another questions that is widely debated in the United States is whether or not women should be allowed to be drafted or serve in active combat. I feel that women are capable of doing the same work as men, on or off the battlefield. Personally, I think that women are not able to participate in actual combat because of a lack of American society maturity. The American society is not mature enough to accept that women are as capable as men during combat.
