...nstream environmentalism has only recently been realized. In 1970 the Environmental Protection Agency was created to help bring global awareness to the idea that our environment is getting worse. We are often ignorant of the fact that our behavior is destroying this planet because we are blinded by the green. The acquisition of wealth is the main driving force in our lives. And we will do it at the expense of our environment because to us it’s not a big deal right now. We would rather have the huge mansion and expensive sports car. Some strength to the argument of environmental optimism is that we must realize the fact that mother Earth is not a renewable resource. We are destroying her everyday because of the human need to succeed and make profits in the industrial world. But the optimists say that we should not interfere with the market economies because “economic growth occurs whenever people take resources and rearrange them in ways that are more valuable”. It seems to me that optimists downplay the thought that our environment is degrading. This is in itself a weakness because they cannot realize their faults. The drive to have a good economy is not bad. But we must realize that our environment is dying and we must take steps in order for it to go on surviving.
