The book was about a Police Commissioner who was also a thief and able to hide his crimes. At one point, he dressed up as a nun to prevent his capture. It was almost as if a regular person, who’s greedy, a thief, or lies, can put on a costume and become a messenger of god. Within the story, there are several references to the sky. “The space of sky above us was the colour of ever-changing violet and towards it the lamps of the street lifted their feeble lanterns.” This paragraph implies the lanterns are trying to light the dark, but the dark is too vast for such a pathetic attempt, so why try? The boy has a deep fascination, a stalking like quality for the girl. “Her image accompanied me even in places the most hostile to romance.” His life was accompanied by her, even though he did not even know her. He was a hopeless romantic, and willing to do anything for her – even go to the bazaar for her. The boy did not have enough money for the bazaar; so he turned to his uncle. “At nine o’clock I heard my uncle’s latchkey in the halldoor”. His uncle was running late, but the boy waited.
