All divorce indicators show that marriage dissolution is lower but that the average speed of the process is clearly higher in Greece than in the rest of the EU. Causes of divorce range from economic problems to difficulty adjusting to the woman as a member of the labor force. Poverty is also a reality that some families have to come to face. Although relative poverty has remained rather stable over time (between 17% and 18%), the families falling in this category struggle to stay positive. Also, pressures regarding personal time and parental obligations are extremely high for women, and the concept of burden-sharing clearly remains a losing proposition for them. The scarcity of child-care services tends to aggravate the unequal allocation between men and women of the time devoted to family obligations. These factors combined with the every-day pressures of employment and raising a family can lead to arguments within the household. Child care remains one of the main concerns for Greek families.
