...e than 700,000 people sailed over from Europe or Africa. The distress that was put on the Indians and their food supply was enormous. This overpopulating of land also made the relationship between the two very different cultures not a very good one. The Indians became very unfriendly with these people that came over from Europe, and were already trying to take their land and food from them. As a result of this a lot of the new settlers were killed and Jamestown was almost wiped out entirely. Even with the outrageous death rate, almost a thousand new settlers made the journey over to this new land, even when they knew that the Indians were starting to become hostile to them. But slowly, the English population begin to rise slowly, and by 1640 there were about 8,100 settlers. For about 10 years, war with the Indians was to be expected, but in 1623 the settlers retaliated and poisoned 200 Indians that had been invited to a “peace conference.” Most of the European settlers or immigrants who sailed over to America were single young men whose job was to be a servant to a high upper-class family. This family was almost always very wealthy. Most of the young male servants gave their labor in trade for food, shelter, and almost minute fees after their terms of service were up. The young men that signed an indenture before boarding the ship to their destination, usually served four or five years.
