Identifying the roles of science

...o twelve percent in the springtime. Because of this distress scientists from Environment Canada, the Canadian Space Agency, the University of Toronto, York University and the University of Waterloo have created a giant 25 story balloon to travel through the ozone layer to gather information as part of the Middle Atmosphere Nitrogen Trend Assessment (MANTRA). This research tactic will collect information on the consequences of industrial chemicals and climate change on the ozone layer. Scientists’ goal is to use an ozone measuring instrument call MAESTRO (Measurements of Aerosol Extinction in the Stratospheric and Troposphere Retrieved by Occultation) to document the thickness of the ozone layer and calculate CFC’s to find out the rate that the ozone is depleting. In the future scientists hope to solve the question of how pollutants decrease the ozone layer and to get all countries in the world to join the fight against emissions. Once reduction starts to occur, the predictions are that recovery should start in year 2050. The second article in concern is Testing Vehicle Emissions in Canada and discusses the amount of emissions that are emitted into the air, and whether vehicles meet the fuel consumption and emission standards quoted by the manufacturer. Scientists and engineers at Environment Canada’s Environmental Technology Centre (ETC) have created a strategy for testing cars and trucks to make sure the standards are met. In order to preserve a clean and healthy environment the scientists at the ETC perform a series laboratory and field studies on air pollution to support the research and development of new technologies to decrease pollution. Specialized instruments have been created to measure the different components of the exhaust emissions from vehicles and engines such as nitrogen oxides and other smog causing pollutants. These tests are preformed to eventually stop or decrease the amount of harm humans a...
