Early men were hunters and sought food for their families. Pieces of slate rock and wood were formed to make very sharp points to pierce the flesh of animals. The formed points were attached to long, sturdy pieces of wood to make an arrow. Feathers were attached at the end of the rod for accuracy. The bow was normally created by using a larger more flexible piece of wood; lemon wood, elm or yew. The earliest composite bow was created in the shape of the letter C and it took two people to string it. The string was usually made of linen saturated in bees wax to deter the absorption of water. Creating the bow and arrow allowed more precision with hunting and continued to be used for that purpose for many years.
