A good man is hard to find

...ate ending. The grandmother is the point of interest in the story because she experiences a revelation, a self awareness. The grandmother goes through life believing that she is not only a good person, but perhaps better than everyone else. She is denying what the real issues are and is so convinced that she is proper and good that she does not realize the flaws in her character. O’Connor stresses the point that the grandmother thinks of herself as a lady, a respectable woman. O’Connor’s close description of what the grandmother is wearing shows the grandmother’s pride in her own self. It is said that, “In case of an accident, anyone seeing her dead on the highway would know at once that she was a lady” (406). The grandmother also feels the need to pity those who she thinks are below her and in a sense is putting them down. She speaks of the little Negro boy with no pants on saying that “Little niggers in the country don’t have things like we do” (406). The grandmother concerns herself with the class and status of those around her, and in turn does not examine herself. The Misfit helps the grandmother to realize her flaws which leads to her epiphany just as she faces death, and with a gun staring her in the face she begins to pray to Jesus. The grandmother prior to her epiphany was self-centered and not spiritually inclined in the least. She suffered primarily from the sin of pride. But while coming so close to death she has a self-realization that she probably could not have handled had The Misfit not killed her. In referring to the Misfit as one of her own children, the grandmother unintentionally confirms her own death.
