Children Need Education
...ut into leading today’s youth towards higher education is right on track. However, this statement is true not only to the African-American youth, but for the entire youth of America regardless of color or ethnicity. We have become a nation that thrives off of quick money schemes and fads that generations before us would have never allowed. Not only does the media send the wrong message to children, they also teach them that the general public’s value system has deteriorated from generations before. As a society, we are intrigued with athletics because it is financially lucrative for all parties involved, especially the player. Let us not Hebert 2 forget, children learn and imitate from their parents and guardians, so when we watch the Super Bowl or the NBA finals, we are feeding into the idea that professional sports is a desirable goal to try to achieve. We do not need to stray from athletics while developing a child, rather teach the child the reasoning behind education and why it is invaluable whether he or she becomes a professional player or not. We need to reevaluate our value systems and begin to teach our children what is truly important in life. We have to remember how important we, as teenagers, felt the play-off game was in high school. That game may have felt like one of the most important times in our lives, but as we matured, we realized that our grade point average affected us more than if we won that game or not. Also, let us not overlook the fact that many professional athletes have obtained their college education purely because they excelled in a certain sport.
