...e begins to understand what her mother had said all along. Her family ties showed her where she comes from and her true heritage: “And now I see what part of me is Chinese. It is so obvious. It is my family. It is in our blood. After all these years, it can finally be let go” (1078). Once one understands where they come from and what their heritage is they have a better understanding of themselves. The story’s main character is Jandale Woo. The reader is shown that Ms. Woo doesn’t feel a connection with her Chinese background and feels like she’ll be letting her mother down if she doesn’t: “I feel forlorn. I think about what my mother said, about activating my genes and becoming Chinese. And I wonder what she meant” (1073). As the story progresses one really sees Jandale really connecting with her relatives as a foreshadowing of events to come. Jandale Woo is a dynamic character because we see a progression toward the realization of her roots and finding the Chinese woman that lives inside of her. In the beginning of the story she refers to the Chinese in here going as deep as her skin to the progression at the end where she acknowledges her family is what makes her Chinese and the history that she comes from: “And now I also see what part of me is Chinese. It is so obvious. It is my family. It is our blood. After all these years, it can finally be let go” (1078) Her internal conflict of trying to understand what her mother had told her for so long had dissipated once she finally met her sister...
