...ore or even settle in new lands. They basically used the booty system in their raids on foreign land, taking whatever they need or want, conquering the land, gain power, money, more forces, than return and do it all over again. Eventually they would come back and over through the king. The Vikings technology were a big factor in there movement and success in their raids on foreign lands. The Vikings weapons were portable and flexible. Their weapons consisted of spear, sword and battle-axe, although bows and arrows and other missiles were also used. Their swords were light and easy to use and their spears were sufficient in length around 2 to 3 meters in length, efficient for a deadly kill. The Vikings were excellent sailors, their boats that they used as their main transport to move from country to country was built with strong sturdy wood, made swift and long to cut across oceans, rivers, etc. These ships were very efficient, flexible, and could move with storms. The ships hold a good amount of Vikings of about 25 to 60 men and on bigger ships 100 or more could have been on the ships. They also added weapons or horses in their ships if they needed to. The shallow draught of these ships meant that they were able to reach far inland by river and stream, striking and moving on before local forces could muster. They were steered not by a rudder, but by a single oar mounted on the starboard side. These ships were probably the main point that leads to the Vikings success. Their magnificent ships during that time have allowed the Vikings to move swiftly into near nations or even all the way to North America. The Vikings went to England, Ireland, France, Russia, and further out to Iceland, Greenland and North America. The main purpose of the Vikings movement was to raid other small unguarded nations and apply the booty system. Take whatever they need and move out. These small raids were all over Europe especially in the British Isles, it lasted from 770’s – 820’s. The raids became even more frequent between the 830’s and 850’s; this has caused much damage to England. In 850 the Vikings stayed in England, they called it the “over winter”. England had enough and paid the Vikings in 865-870 called “Micel Here”, they wanted to use Vikings to protect them from other Vikings. During the 870-880’s Vikings become more English men, they marry Anglo Saxon women and become almost like English citizens. Around 890-900’s the raids slow down, becomes less fierce. A Norwegian King “CNUT” comes to Denmark, becomes king and at the same time attacks England and becomes king there in 1012. This Viking was the first king to have Unitary Kingship in Europe. Around the same time in 799 France was being raided by Vikings, it was called the “Noirmowhier”. The Vikings raided the monasteries, stole a lot of goods, tortured the captures and used some for slaves when they get back to their homeland. This raid and torture was very shocking to the Carolingians who were currently France at the time. Carolingians feared the Vikings so later in Normandy, franks hired Vikings as guards in 911. Charles the Bald hired “Rollo”, a chief of Vikings, but had to have an oath to the king of France, however he gets a huge chunk of land on the north of France with...
