College vs. High School
...to the high school world. I was now at the bottom of the food chain once again, prone to the jokes of upperclassmen since I was considered “fresh meat.” When I left high school and entered college I experienced the same type of treatment and atmosphere. Here I will also be the new kid on campus. Nobody knows me for the most part, and most don’t seem to care to get to know me. College freshman are put up to the same type of criticism and exposure as when I entered high school my first year. It was not always easy, but I know that someday I will be the upperclassmen thinking the same way the current ones are now. The social life in high school starts to kick in a little more, football games and other sporting events are popular among the students. Parties tend to get thrown, and plenty of underage drinking citations are also given out. Much of the same happens in college. The party scene is raised up to an even higher level, underage drinking is prone to happening, and a state of sobriety sometimes does not even occur in classes in some cases. This usually does not occur in high school. I believed class work and academics would be a major change in difficulty. High school for the most part was to help me understand and gain knowledge to enter the real world, or the college domain. College coursework is more in-depth, free-roaming, and graded much more heavily. Every grade counts in college, where as high school more chances at extra credit occurs and it is typically easier to have grades raised. Freedom has been a huge difference between high school and college. While in high school I was still under my parent’s roof. When I attended college I started living on campus, where I soon got a taste of what it’s like to be on my own. No one is here to help me make my decisions, boss me around, or tell me to do my homework, where in high school very much of my life was controlled by my parental guidance.
