They first obtain contractors which cut, and sew the sample garment called a prototype. There are different ways to go about making the first pattern. There is the traditional patter making which consists of flat pattern design. This is when the assistant designer or the pattern maker begins the pattern making process from the designer’s sketches. They can also use an existing pattern which is the called a base pattern. There is also the patter design system, PDS, which is a way of making patterns with the use of computers. And finally there is pattern making by draped designs. They take fabric and drape it over a body form. They can use expensive fabric or muslin. After the pattern is done, they then send the completed prototype to the sample sewing department, along with a swatch of the intended fabric for the actual garment and a spec sheet. After the sample is completed they must approve the prototype’s fit, revise the style or drop it. Once they accept the style, they must estimate the initial cost. They need to research what the cost for the materials will be, the cost of the trims and findings, the cost of labor, and the shipping and other related costs.
