Having strong religious convictions does not make your a moral person. Miss Watson is seen as societies epitome of good because she is very religious. When Huck was staying with Miss Watson they fetched the niggers in and had prayers, and then everyone was off to bed. (Twain 3) She is not a good person because she keeps black slaves. This leads Huck to come to the realization that theres is something wrong with Miss Watson's version of Christianity. (Beaver 96) Just because she goes to church every Sunday does not make her a moral person. Personal views of faith conquer those of society. Because Huck is a very literal thinker he abandons Miss Watson's encouragement of Christianity. Huck prayed for hooks three or four times, but somehow [he] couldnt make it work. (Twain 11) Huck does not understand the spiritual values of Christianity and therefore dismisses the religion as nonsense. Instead Huck adopts his own values because he has no rules to go by, he is guided by the voice within himself. (Bellamy 97) Huck distinguishes what is truely right fom wrong through his conscience rather than being told by society. To understand what is right, the general public's religious ideals must be shed. Racism is not ethical even if it is accepted by society. Huck's community applauds racism.
