...and putting them together to make an image seen by the reader. The images that Thomas uses in his poems as I saw them were of nature, and at the same time human life and feelings. It is a combination and a comparison between the two. This was a rather short poem, but one that I really enjoyed, and that shows the imagery of people and nature combined. This was in a collection of poems called “The Waste Land and other poems”, and the name of this particular piece is “New Hampshire”; Children’s voices in the orchard Between the blossom- and the fruit-time: Golden head, crimson head, Between the green tip and the root. Black wing, brown wing, hover over; Twenty years and the spring is over; To-day grieves, to-morrow grieves, Cover me over, light-in-leaves; Golden head, black wing, Cling, swing, Spring, sing, Swing up into the apple-tree. Along with great imagery, this poem also shows strong placement of lines and line breaks throughout the entire piece. As do all of his works of art. The lines end on strong words that leave the reader either pausing to think about a strong point, or flowing right through the section, and keeps the reader moving on and anxious to keep going, while wondering what is next. Another one of Thomas’ poems that shows that shares some of the same characteristics concerning strong imagery and word choice, is from the same collection, and titled, “Sweeney Among the Nightingales”. I only chose three of the stanzas from the poem, because I didn’t feel that I should type them all out, but these are a few that show the imagery and styles that I enjoyed from reading his material.
