The agreement as far as return passage, says “ The emigrant on completing a continuous residence of ten years in British Guiana will become entitled to a certificate of exemption from labor and shall be provided with a free return back to Calcutta. (Doc.#7) Basely, the agreement bounds them to a certain number of years to work and after completion, the emigrants could return home. Indentured laborers are not slaves brought over in fetters and working under the lash. (Doc.#1) However, Indentured laborers are recruits who have to serve a period of service in return for a passage home. Several Indentured or contract laborers in the nineteenth and early twentieth century origin from India, China, and Japan. (Doc.#4) Several of these laborers were Japanese, Chinese and Asian Indians who migrated to Cuba, Trinidad, Suriname, and Guiana. (Doc.#3) During 1834 to 1919, any emigrant who migrated to those four Caribbean colonies would receive work. In the Caribbean colonies, there is lots of land for sugar plantations. In the island of Mauritius, there is only a small area under sugar cultivation. But, this area produces 100,000 tons of sugar annually, not fewer than 600,000 laborers are required. (Doc. 2) Is seems as if there needs to be more laborers to produce that many tons of sugar. In year of 1851, there was more than 70,000 Asian Indians in Mauritius. (Doc.#5) Asian Indians migrated to all four Caribbean colonies, Cuba, Trinidad, Suriname, and Guiana. In 1885, newly arrived Asian Indian indentured laborers were awaiting for an assignment to work on sugar plantations in Suriname.
