Equal Rights for Same-Sex Couples
...ntee that all citizens can enjoy equal rights? I chose this topic because I live in Massachusetts and have been surrounded by all the hype about allowing same-sex marriages. The subject is very debatable and there are many reasons why people are for or against it. People who are against it are just not comfortable with the idea, they say it offends religion, and they say gay sex is unnatural, gross, and not masculine. Although the lifestyle of gays and lesbians does not reflect mine, I still believe they should be able to marry regardless of sexual preference. They are human beings too so they should have the same rights. Some people say that being homosexual is a disease but even so, if you had any disease should you be discouraged from certain rights? Rights for blacks and women have changed heavily over the years and I think rights for gays can change too. There are many current issues surrounding the topic of same-sex marriage. Massachusetts became the first state to allow same-sex marriages to residents only in May2004. Other states, like Louisiana, just approved a ban on same-sex marriages. In the past couple weeks, states have been arguing over same-sex parental rights and gay couples want to sue over an Oklahoma adoption law. Another current issue is the presidential election in November. President Bush is anti-gay marriage and John Kerry is pro-gay marriage. Experts say that gay marriage ruling seems impermeable. In a 4-3 ruling, the court said banning gays and lesbians from marrying violates the state constitution. However, it stayed its ruling for six months. Some experts believed that during this time lawmakers would create a civil union law similar to the one in Vermont. In conclusion, same-sex marriage is a highly debated topic in the United States.
