However, most crimes committed with a handgun in America aren’t with licensed firearms. “Of the 88,649 gun deaths reported by all the countries, the United States accounted for 45 percent.” Countries such as Sweden, Japan and Great Britain have much stricter gun control laws which require firearm safety courses. These gun control laws have a direct relationship to the numbers of gun related deaths in each country. “Japan, where very few people own guns, averages 124 gun-related attacks a year, and less than 1 percent end in death. Police often raid the homes of those suspected of having weapons.” Perhaps if the United States followed similar laws, the number of deaths would drop drastically. John Winthrop, the first president of the Confederation of New England, commented on such 359 years ago in his “Speech to the General Court” in 1645.
