whistle of love
...st two bars of “Annie Laurie” to show his love and assure his sweetheart of his safety. It was a love code which only the girl could understand. However, the peculiar whistle on the railroad soon drew the attention of people nearby. They discovered the secret, shared the love whistle, became participants in this love affaire themselves, and changed under the influence of love like the man. When people first noticed the special whistle, they never expected it to be a romantic love code. The whistle was romantic; while people were realistic. They thought it was probably a “whimsical” expression of the engineer. They never gave romance a second thought, as they were sure that no one would be keen on this play of romance which belonged to their grand-grand-parents. It existed only in movies, not in reality. We could also conclude from these people’s speculations that they had no passions in life. Lack of belief in love, they were habitually skeptical of anything beautiful. They refused to admit the existence of pleasant surprises. Day after day, they just did the work, earned the money, had the meals, and went back home. They were no longer passionate, energetic, and imaginative. Love makes life meaningful. Without it, it’s natural that their life was nothing but a bunch of meaningless gossips. Soon, these people were proved wrong when one of them went down to the village and figured out that the whistle was indeed a code of love. On learning this news, people were surprised and excited. They gave it much concern. They discussed the romance like a daily routine; they cared about every twist and turn of the relationship; they even got so attached to the musical whistle that without it they felt lost and empty. It was from this day on that the love whistle began to influence people subconsciously and awaken their longings for true love. People began to change. “The men quarreled less frequently, were more considerate and helpful to each other.” “It cheered us all, that little touch of honest romance. The world seemed a bit better for it.” The love whistle warmed people’s hearts. It became an impetus in their life. They changed because they knew in this world, around them, there still existed love, the magic of which they could all have a share, the warmth of which could melt the ice of the heart. Just when people began to regain their faith in love, the whistle stopped. Immediately, it became a proof for those who reserved their doubts toward this relationship. They argued that the young couple’s love could not get out of the doomed faith. The man was no saint; he was an ordinary person like all the others. When the passions had been exhausted, he went back to his original way. Love was betrayed once again. Gone was the love whistle; gone was people’s good mood, tolerance and consideration; gone was people’s confidence in love and life. The power of the cynical world was proved stronger than that of love. People felt “the world was as drab as ever”. But just because of this change, we could see that people were not totally indifferent or cold toward the outside world. They were not as cynical as they appeared to be. They could still feel the existence of love, be touched and influenced. That is to say, their heart preserved the ability to love and be loved in spite of their despair of it. It’s just that they buried it so deep in the heart that sometimes they even forgot and denied its existence. A little romantic relationship would remind them of their hidden longing for love. It’s the human nature to pursue true love even if many of them never succeeded. When the young couple turned out to be on a honeymoon vacation, people’s charges of their love were once again mistaken. One week later, the whistle was heard in a new place, a place where the couple had moved. By this time, the love of this young couple had also become an indispensable part of people’s daily life. The whistle had a pacifying effect on this uneasy world. It seemed to bring with it peace, friendship, affection, gentleness and toleran...
