Attendance will be taken and you will be given points for attending. If you miss class, you are responsible for any material covered (including if we see a film that night, you may have to go rent it). Any serious illness or other extenuating circumstances should be brought to my attention immediately. Excessive absences will be detrimental to your grade. Please note that it is your responsibility to make sure your name is on the attendance sheet daily. Class Participation: This class meets for two and one half hours. The more you put into the discussion the quicker the time goes by and the more you get out of this class. Do not hesitate to ask questions, to bring in material, texts, films, etc. that you think would add to our discussion about popular culture. Plagiarism: Any work that you submit for a grade in this class is expected to be your own. Any quotations, paraphrasing, ideas that are not yours, must be properly cited by you. The misrepresentation of your work is one of the most serious academic offenses you can commit. Anyone caught plagiarizing (whether intended or not) will fail the course and may be subjected to additional university action. In addition, on your transcript from this University you will have a failing grade with a note added that it was for academic dishonesty. Late Work: In order to be fair to everyone, any work that is turned in late will be penalized one letter grade for each day that it is late, excluding the weekend. Assignments turned in on the due date but after it has been collected during class will be considered one day late. E-Mail: Due to past problems with turning in assignments via e-mail, I will no longer accept any work via this avenue of communication. However, I will try my best to respond to questions sent via e-mail in a timely manner. Please be advised that I am not accessible 24 hours a day so just because you send a question via e-mail does not mean you will receive a response that same day. Language: I would appreciate your efforts in using gender neutral language in your speaking and writing for this class. Since our language does lead us to perceive in certain ways, gender neutral language will help all of us to begin to perceive women and men equally. For example, use ‘people’ or ‘individuals’ instead of ‘man’ and ‘mankind.’ Use ‘s/he’ instead of ‘he’ when the person to whom you are referring could be either female or male. Assignments: 1. Three written essays. Identity (3-5 pages) Write a compelling autobiography that shares your understanding of your identity as it has been shaped or effected by your consumption of popular culture texts. (What are your favorite pop culture texts? Describe how your affinity for these texts effects how you present yourself or how you have created a piece or all of your identity). Your essay should be interesting, relevant, and must use critical concepts we have discussed in class. Critical Essay (7-10 pages) (Can be a scholarly journal article review, a lengthy film review, television series review, music review, book (genre) review, analysis of a current event, analysis of a public place; analysis of architecture genres or anything else that you find interesting that I agree to).
