Catcher in the Rye

...aves Pencey, planning on spending a few days in New York before going home, although his parents were expecting him home on Wednesday, due to Christmas break vacation. He plans on visiting his history teacher before he leaves however, and after his visit with him, his story of a few odd days in New York begins. The title of this story emerges later on when, in a discussion with Phoebe Caulfield, Holden is asked what he would like to be when he grew older. He wants to be the catcher in the rye, although i won't quite explain what this means, so as not to ruin it. There are a few characters that play a vital role in this story. One of these people is Phoebe, Holden's kid sister. She's a skinny 8 year old that love to rollerskate. Holden's always liked her and watched after her. They have a mutual love and respect for each other, and both enjoy being in the other's company. Another is Allie, Holden's deceased younger brother. When he died, Holden was hit so hard by his death that he punched out all the windows in the garage. Also important is Allie's glove, the glove he used when he played baseball. He had written many different poems scattered on the glove, so that when he played outfield, he would have something to read and he would not be bored. Holden used this glove as an inspiriation to write a composition for Stradlater. He of course wasn't too thrilled about the idea, especially when he learned that while he would be doing this report, Stradlater would most likely be giving Jane Gallagher "the time", but when Stradlater came back and looked at the essay, he complained about it, which led Holden to rip it up. Holden is a weird type of guy. He will quite often go to great risks of being seen as odd, just to amuse himself. For instance, a major item in the story is his red hunting hat. The hat has a beak on the front if it, but Holden always wears it in the back,with the peak aiming behind him because that's the way he likes to wear it.
