As for pigeons, they use working memory for several things like remembering where their going or what they are doing. In their natural habitat pigeons are usually looking around for food, this means that without memory of were they can get food, or where they were two minutes ago, they would not be able to survive. Pigeons need to remember where they laid their eggs and where their nests are. They usually go out for food, and they need to remember where to come back to or else their children would die. Rats use working memory in their natural habitat too. For example, if a rat goes in a certain area and is threatened by a person, animal or even another rat, it is going to run away and remember two minutes later that it would be a bad idea to go that same area. Also, I watched a news program where they showed that if one rat eats something poisonous, the rat will go back to the other rats and tell them about the poison so that they would not eat from it. Even if there is non- poisonous food, the rat will go to the other rats and tell them where it is. In this case, the rat would have to remember where the food was last. Working memory in rats, or in any animal can prevent it from getting hurt or even shield it from death. A monkey’s use for working memory is especially essential for living. Many examples of memory could be observed in monkeys. For instance, being able to find food for their young is very important. In order to do that, monkeys have to be able to remember where they were last so that they do not look for food in the same area. If there appears to be food in a certain area, they need to remember to go back quickly before any other animal finds it. Monkeys also have to be able to feed their young, which means they have to know when the last time they fed them, and when they need food or sleep.
