"It would degrade me to marry Heathcliff now; so he shall never know how I love him; and that, not because he's handsome, Nelly, but because he's more myself than I am. Whatever our souls are made of, his and mine are the same, and his is a difference, as a moonbeam from lightning or frost from fire."(212) When word of the proposal reaches Heathcliff, he runs away to escape his problems, only to return three years later, just after the marriage of Catherine and Edgar. Once again, Heathcliff can be considered the victim. Through character development, Emily Bronte alters perceptions of Heathcliff as the reader views him in a different light. As Heathcliff reflects on past injustices, he embarks on a path of vicious revenge on all those who had wronged him. Heathcliff, aware of the fact that Catherine was in love with him, elopes with Isabelle Linton, who he has no feelings towards. Heathcliff treats Isabelle harshly, and she eventually flees to London to escape him just after the birth of their child, Linton. Catherine soon contracts a deadly disease and passes away. Heathcliff, unable to accept the loss of Catherine, begs her ghost not to leave him and to haunt him. At this time, the reader views Heathcliff as a victim, due to the sympathic emotions he expresses at the loss of his true love. Nelly's close relationship with the members of the Linton and Earnshaw families allow her to provide an abundance of details, which she never ceases to share. Nelly's tales encase the events of two generations that reside at Thorsome Groves and Wuthering Heights. Due to the vast time span and the minute detials provided, Nelly provides a slow-moving plot in whcih suspenseful moments are few, presenting yet another element of interpretive literature in Wuthering Heights.
