Maximus starts off as a commander of the armies of the north of Rome and a General of the Felix Legion. However, he appears to be more interested in his family and his farm. The director shows Maximus’ desire to go back and see his family and harvesting his crops very early in the movie. At the very start of the movie, Maximus says: “Three weeks from now, I will be harvesting my crops” His desire to go home is even more evident when he is offered to take over Rome when the emperor dies and he declines the offer. I think that this makes Maximus very similar to Frodo because he also wishes to go home when he starts his adventure. When Maximus’ wife and children are killed, he shows emotion. However, a little while after he clicks off and takes things as they come. I think that this is shown in the movie when a slave trader enslaves him. He is made to show his fighting skills, but he just stands there and gets beaten. This shows that he didn’t really care. There is also another instance where he has the opportunity to kill his wife and son’s murderer, but he doesn’t take it. This shows that Maximus wasn’t full fixed on revenge. He also keeps his cool when the murderer started to insult his wife and son and maximus says to him: “The time for honouring yourself will soon be at an end, your highness” He was able to accept the fact that although his wife and son had been killed, he could not just give up.
