So why did he goes down in history ? He was the first to represent Spain on the voyage. Spain, France, and England were the power player at the time. Every country wants to be the first to put their name down for discovery. The story of Pilgrims settle in Massachusetts in 1620 is not so true as it seem in history books. Most textbook state that Puritans come to America to enjoy religious freedom. They fail to mention the fact that they were only about 32 Puritans on board the Mayflower. The real reason for the voyage was probably “greed”. All the Pilgrims want the land and the rich resources in America. History can be very difficult to teach because we may not know the real answer to explain the situation. History is like storytelling and stories are base on the analysis of historians. Sometimes historians disagree with each other. One good example is the disagreement of the Mayflower destination. Mayflower was first destined to arrive in Virginia. Some historians believe that the storm flew them off course. Some think that the Puritans hijack the ship and purposely head toward Massachusetts. Most textbooks state that Pilgrims were the first to settle in Plymouth. Loewen argue otherwise. He argues that Indians had settled the land before the Pilgrims. The land had been cultivated. Many texts claim that Puritans clear the wilderness. Puritan settlers never clear the wilderness. Pilgrims did not find any settler on the land because the Indians population had suffers from many diseases that were brought over from Europe. This is the proof that there were signs of earlier settlement. Textbooks often never explain this. Textbook often teach students to associate Thanksgiving with Pilgrim. It stated that Pilgrim have the first Thanksgiving in America. This is not true. However, information present this way is not completely wrong. Information present in the “wrong” way is easier to understand. If textbooks present the information of the true story about Thanksgiving, students will sure be confused.
