...irst and foremost, the statement attached to this story is not true because, man is capable of surviving without the technology mentioned in the story. The house cooked, cleaned, watered the lawn and performed other tasks that man could do. Technology can be programmed to replace some of man’s chores, but it is unable to make decisions, think for itself, and perform tasks it is not programmed to do. “Today even simple learning tasks still go well beyond the world’s most capable computer.” (Gates, p. 255) The computer cannot learn on it’s own without some additional input from man. Thus, technology is not a necessity for man’s prosperity and continued existence because it simply does what it is programmed to do and is still incapable of performing on its own or thinking for itself. In addition, the statement attached to the story is not true because, technology is not man’s best hope for his continued existence and prosperity; it along with everything else in the world will come to its demise eventually. This is proven in the story because the radioactivity destroyed the city and left this lone house standing in a pile of ashes and rubble. Man attempted to make provisions for technology (represented as the house in the story) to be immortal; however, like man, the technology proved mortal and ultimately died. Lastly, the statement given was not true because in the story man was never shown advancement from any technology; nevertheless man was not even mentioned in the story. However, “as society and the problems that face it become more and more complex and machines become more and more intelligent, people will let machines make more of their decisions for them, simply because machine-made decisions will bring better results than man-made ones” (Wired, pg. 239). If technology could make its own decisions, there would not be a need for man; technology could exist without man. Therefore we will be putting too many of our lives and trust in the hands of technology. Like in the story there was technology, but no humans to enjoy the labors of the technology, proving it to be useless. In conclusion the statement assigned to this story shows no relationship to man and its continued existence and prosperity through technology.
