Ebert says that the Marion Crane story is an adequate setup for a Hitchcock movie and never for a moment feels like material manufactured to mislead us. I completely agree. I think it was genius to set up the story completely on the supposed main character, Marion Crane and killing her about a third of the way through the movie. It produced a kind of “anything can happen” kind of feeling throughout the movie and I think that’s one of the films best qualities.
