...ere was the detassiling job which lasted only a week, then there was that landscaping job I had at Sutherland Square which after a week I quit (I was sick of making the streets and yards of rich white folk's look perfect through hard labor), then there was (what I consider) my first real job at the Royal Fork. It was a nice place to work and I had intended for it to be the first job to last for more than a week or two, unfortunally that wasn't the case. It was during the school year that I had applied to several businesses in the area, mostly in the food industry: Taco Bell, Bebops, and Royal Fork. The only place I received an interview was from Royal Fork. I prepared myself for the interview with a nice suit. I practiced my answers for potential questions the manager might give, and after I went through with the interview I came out proud, for I had received the job. I had to clean the tables and the seats, I had to transport dirty dishes to the dishwashers, and I had to sweep up crumbs from the floors. It wasn't the most exciting job ever but it was good enough for me (and a lot better than landscaping). After a good two weeks of hard work at the Royal Fork I had to go on vacation to St. Louis during spring break, I would've rather stayed and got in more hours but I was forced to go. I had a good time on vacation and was prepared to return to my employment life in Cedar Rapids. When I got back on the job some of my fellow employees started to tell me that the place was closing down, at first I thought they were just kidding around but I soon came to realize they weren’t kidding at all. I consulted my manager and he affirmed it, telling me that everyone was notified about this at a meeting while I was on vacation.
