...th the stages of adolescence. For many high school students, depression is manageable. While others just expect it to go away. The odds are it won’t. Depression is like “The common cold of mental health.” Everybody feels “down” from time to time, it’s normal. However, depression is very common in college students as well. There are many contributing factor for depression in college students. Depression can be triggered by any stressful life changes. For many young adults, college is the first major life change they have experienced. College students often try to take on too many tasks. They may problems getting along with their roommate, or are too concerned on financial situations. It may simply be that, they may also be having a tough time with classes. College students who are depressed may have difficulty concentrating or making decisions. There are many signs of a serious depression. Some signs are: sad mood, sleeping problems, change in appetite, loss of concentration, and suicidal thoughts. When a person is depressed it is not unusual to feel hopeless and helpless. I believe that it is essential to recognize that depression is an illness and that people don’t just routinely adjust, adapt or get over it. Without that recognition, a person can begin a lifetime course of depression that tends to get worse. If depression isn’t caught in the earliest stages, it tends to worsen in its severity.
