...the 30’s people had a stronger set of values particularly when it came to their name. Because during the times of slavery one of the first things a slave owner would do is change the names of their bonded servants for their convenience. It is understandable why one would feel strongly about being called any other name. After all, Marguerita loved her mother and was proud of the name she gave her. Marguerita started to think of how she could stop working for this woman, because her grandmother would not let her quit for just any old reason. Marguerita was forced in to making the decision on whether or not she would standup for herself and show that she was not going to take being call by anything other then her birth giving name for the convince of some narrow-minded person. She started to think of ways she could be fired and then she remembered just how much Mrs. Cullinan loved her green glassware set. To show that she was not going to be insulted or belittled by anyone, Marguerita started to make some noise in the kitchen. Mrs. Cullinan went to see what was going on, and as she walked in Marguerita dropped a couple of green glasses on the floor. Mrs. Cullinan started to yell and get all upset, and then the girls came in from the porch to see what was going on. They saw that the glasses had been broke and they asked if it was Mary. Mrs. Cullinan replied her name is not Mary, its Marguerita. As Marguerita walked out the front door, she thought to herself “Mrs. Cullinan was right about one thing my name is not Mary” (Maya Angelou 183). At this point Marguerita knew she was free but she also understood in order to get there she had to grow up vary fast and had to make several adult decisions along the way. Marguerita also k...
