After his bride-to-be, Rosa, was poisoned (and I never did understand by whom or why she was poisoned) Esteban left for the countryside to develop a life of his own by starting a ranch. He was tyrannical and treated the natives living on his property like slaves. He married Clara, the clairvoyant sister of the deceased Rosa. They eventually had one child, Alba. Clara had been in love with Esteban since she was a child. After her sister died, she blamed herself and did not speak one word until Esteban came to propose to her years later. After they were married, on the day their child was born, Clara’s parents mysteriously drive into a moving train and explode to bits. The aftermath of their tragic death was never mentioned in the movie. Unbeknown to Esteban, his sister was eventually invited by Clara to live with them on the ranch. The relationship between Clara and the sister in law was another strange, unexplained issue. He hated his sister whom we were lead to believe was a lesbian, lusting after his own wife. (cut to the weird seen where the priest is asking her to “describe in detail” what she saw in the bedroom of her brother and his wife) Alba fell in love with a young revolutionary, Pedro who just happened to be the son of his lead servant. There forbidden love was yet another sub-plot to the many other plots. Esteban tried to kill Pedro and chased him for many years. Alba has a daughter with Pedro whom he does not meet until she is about 10 yeas old. Before he married Clara, Esteban had raped and impregnated one of his servants.
