...w, a bright warm fire burning, a little dachshund curled up in front of the fireplace, and large comfy looking furniture. Now, for a seventeen year old male, this place probably reminded him a little bit of his mother’s place. A place of comfort and catering where everything would be taken care of for him and a good meal was a given. What seventeen year old boy is going to pass that up when he’s far away from home in a strange town? The landlady was very aware of this and had her place set up perfectly to draw him in. The landlady is a middle aged woman who, to Billy, seems very lonely and a sweet soul. Because of his immaturity and inexperience in reading people all he sees in the landlady is her round pink face and gentle blue eyes; which she uses to her advantage. He thinks maybe she has lost a son in the war and in Billy’s mind, he’s probably doing her a favor by staying with her. Although the landlady has already showed several signs of being unstable, he’s completely clueless to the fact she’s a killer! Here’s just one example of how he disregards these obvious clues. Page 127, 2nd full paragraph. “I’m so glad you appeared,” she said, looking earnestly into his face. “I was beginning to get worried.” “That’s all right,” Billy answered brightly. “You musn’t worry about me.” The landlady has obviously been waiting for Billy and was worried she wouldn’t have anyone to kill and stuff. Instead of Billy taking a thought to this, he just blows it off and humors her proving how vulnerable Billy really is.
