WHY AFRICAN-AMERICANS SHOULD VOTE

...e twentieth century, voices and faces of determined people began to emerge. One was Medgar Evers. Medgar Evers was on a nine-man death list in the South but did not budge. He continued organizing voter registration drives and demonstrations. Evers family would endure threats by white supremacists and even had firebombs thrown in their home. These incidents did not deter Evers because he believed in his people, what he was doing, and he believed that one day we would be able to vote without confrontation. Medgar Evers was one of the activists who sacrificed his life for African-Americans. Sadly, if it was not for his death, the Civil Rights Bill of 1965 would not have been passed. Another man of the same caliber as Evers was Martin Luther King Jr. He to wanted unfair laws changed and Black to register and vote. There were also members of organizations such as the Student Non-violent Coordinating Committee who wanted to see equal rights for everyone. This committee was comprised of both black and white students and they too sacrificed a lot to see that people of all colors are treated fairly. African-Americans must not let these dynamic individuals’ deaths be nothing. We must embrace what they did for us and praise them for what we are able to do now, for if it was not for these tenacious individuals we would not be where we are today. This is why we must vote, to show that they did not die in vain, and that because of their efforts a great number of doors were opened for African -Americans. In my mind, I do not consider African-Americans as minorities. The population of Jews in the United States is far less than that of African-Americans. However, many people including African-Americans view themselves as minorities. I have and will continue to have the same rights as all other U.S. citizens. Many African-Americans believe that their votes do not count. That is definitely not true; in spite of what many African- Americans have been brainwashed into believing, every single vote cast by a African- American is a very important and extremely valuable vote. Our votes count just as much as the person sitting beside us, whether that person is white or black. We are all American citizens, just look at your birth certificate, and we have to right to have a say on how our government should be run. You must remember that we are not only voting for the next President of the United States, there is a lot more at stake.
