The warm river brings Richard, Gretchen, and her father closer making it feel like they’ve known each other forever. “ He got up and gave me a chair, Gretchen pulled her chair closer to mine, touching my arm.” pg 223. This line says that their close now and would help each other out. “The warmth of the river came up and covered us like a blanker on a chill night” This line says that just by the warm river there made everything else feel warm and feel safer and comfier. Therefore, the river brings comfort and life to everyone living near it. The warm river itself was a remembrance of Gretchens mother. “ After she left, I moved away thinking I would forget, but I was wrong” pg 224. This line says that even if he moved away he would never forget about her. “ He seemed to be trying to see someone on the other side of the river” ps 224. This line says that by the river being there brings back memories of Gretchen’s mother, making him think she’s still there by his side. The river was a big part of that town and a big part of Gretchen’s and her father’s lives. The main meaning/significance of the river is love. By Richard thinking of the river, made him want to love Gretchen more, and line that says this is “ As I sat and looked down, I knew that I did love her “ pg 226.
