Arguments have been made that a lifetime spent in prison is worse than a quick death, quick being a misleading term as the wait for execution is on average ten years. This is not true however, while the convicts may never see outside life again they will have the rest of their life to adjust to prison conditions and will most likely make friends in jail. They will achieve at least a few moments of happiness from a joke or a story or playing a ball game in the prison yard. These luxuries are something their victim will never get in this world. That is why premeditated murder can not be rewarded with life in prison, I say rewarded because it is too lenient on one who has committed premeditated murder. The court’s process to execute a murderer is thought to be too long and that because of its length, due to the amount of appeals filed , the death sentence should be dropped as it is more expensive to go through the lengthy and numerous appeals than to simply keep the person in prison for the rest of their life. The length of time between conviction and execution does serve a purpose. Since the 1970’s at least one hundred have been exonerated due to the advent and widespread use of DNA testing and other factors such as private investigation outside of the courts. If it were not for this time period the innocent could be executed along with the guilty. In 2003 Gov. George Ryan pardoned 4 death row inmates after an extensive investigation starting in 1999. Precautions such as these are in place to make sure that the guilty person is being executed or at least the innocent person is saved. Some would say that because of these errors the death penalty should be abolished, but it has been proven that through the years of waiting for appeals and the ability for Governors to pardon the death row inmates at the last second if necessary, that the chance of ...
