Medication can be used to treat depression; in fact many people prefer this route than some form of talk therapy. Some therapists are concerned that using medication as a form of therapy may discourage the patient from changing his or her depression causing patterns because he or she feels normal on the drugs so there is no reason to go to therapy or change life patterns. There are also many different forms of therapy out there that are conducive with emotional and/or environmental depression such as cognitive therapy. Cognitive therapy is used to help improve self-image and the way the patient views the world. This is for people who focus on negative beliefs for instance that he or she is to blame for everything that has gone wrong in his or her life.
